Attack on CJI BR Gavai: Advocate Rakesh Kishore is suspended by the Bar Council of India

Sources in the courtroom claim that Kishore approached the dais, tried to take off his shoe, and threw it at the judge.

In response to Rakesh Kishore's attempt to assault Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai in public court on Monday, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has immediately suspended Kishore from practicing law.

Before being arrested by security guards and escorted out of the courtroom, Kishore, who is a member of the Bar Council of Delhi, allegedly took off his athletic shoes and tried to throw them at CJI Gavai during court proceedings, according to the BCI order.

BCI Chairman and Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra signed the BCI's temporary suspension decision, which was issued in accordance with the Advocates Act, 1961 and the Bar Council of India Rules on Standards of Professional Conduct and Etiquette.

Kishore shall be prohibited from appearing, acting, pleading, or practicing before any Indian court, tribunal, or authority for the duration of the ban.

The Delhi Bar Council has been ordered to update Kishore's status on its rolls and notify all courts and tribunals under its purview in order to guarantee rapid compliance. To distribute the order to filing and appearance counters and all relevant bar associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, the registries of the Supreme Court, all High Courts, and all District Courts have been instructed to do so.

During the citing of cases on Monday morning, the courtroom drama broke out.

Sources in the courtroom claim that Kishore approached the dais, tried to take off his shoe, and threw it at the judge.

But just in time, the court's security guards stepped in and escorted the attorney outside.

The attorney was heard stating as he left,

CJI Gavai's remarks in a prior case concerning the restoration of a 7-foot decapitated idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho may have been the catalyst for the incident. He had stated when dismissing that case,

"Go now and implore the god itself to take action. You claim to be a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Now go and pray. Since it is an archeological site, ASI must grant approval, among other things.

Social media was rocked by the comment, with many people accusing the CJI of offending religious feelings. Two days later, CJI Gavai addressed the incident in public court, stating that he did not mean any disrespect.

"I respect all religions...This happened on social media," he stated.
