The Gujarat High Court's Asaram Bapu
In the case of Asaram Bapu v. State of Gujarat & Anr, the Gujarat High Court on Thursday extended the temporary medical bail that had been granted to the self-proclaimed Godman and rape criminal until August 21.
Justices Ilesh J. Vora and PM Raval, sitting as a division bench, noted that Asaram is in a serious state in the intensive care unit (ICU).
A extremely high troponin level (2465.59 pg - ml) has been detected in the applicant, who is currently in the intensive care unit at Jupiter Hospital in Indore. His treating physician has said that his status is severe. In such circumstances, pending this plea, the provisional relief granted earlier is extended till 21.08.2025 on the same terms and conditions," the Court ruled.
Specifically, at their most recent hearing, the High Court decided not to grant him another bail extension based on medical reasons.
But Asaram took his case to the Supreme Court, and they let him go to the High Court if he wanted to.
This is the third time Asaram has been granted interim bail.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Gandhinagar court in a rape case. The court convicted Asaram in a case lodged in 2013 for raping a lady devotee from Surat repeatedly between 2001 and 2006. The girl was living at his ashram in Motera.
Asaram is already receiving a life term in another case of raping a young girl in Rajasthan in 2013.
Senior Advocate Shalin Mehta with attorneys Ashish Dagli and Hardik Dave appeared for Asaram.
Senior lawyer Bharat Naik and lawyer Ekant Ahuja represented the private respondent.
