JioStar receives relief from the Delhi High Court, which also orders the blocking of websites and apps that unlawfully broadcast the Cricket World Cup.

The Court stated that rogue mobile apps that steal protected content are a persistent menace and must be dealt with harshly.

The websites and applications that are unlawfully streaming the current Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup and the forthcoming ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup 2026 have been ordered to be blocked in real time by the Delhi High Court [Jiostar India Private Limited v GHD Sports & Ors].

In a January 30 order, Justice Jyoti Singh stated that JioStar, the company that owns the media rights for these competitions, can notify government agencies, internet service providers (ISPs), and domain name registrars (DNRs) about the websites and applications that are streaming the content, and they will be blocked right away.

"Defendant Nos. 5 to 18 [ISPs] shall take steps to immediately block the said UI(s)/website(s) in question upon receiving the said intimation from the Plaintiff [JioStar], and Defendant Nos. 19 and 20 [Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Department of Telecommunications] shall also issue necessary blocking orders immediately upon the Plaintiff communicating the details of the UI(s)/URL(s)/website(s), which are illegally streaming the "Events," the Court ordered."

While considering a lawsuit filed by JioStar, which holds the exclusive broadcast and digital rights for ICC events in India for the 2024–2027 cycle, the Court issued the ex-parte ad interim injunction.

The Court noted that the problem of rogue mobile apps that steal protected content is a persistent menace that requires strict action.

It further stated that JioStar's exclusive rights would be irreversibly violated and revenue would be lost if access to the rogue websites was not blocked soon once.

It approved the injunctive order as a result.
