Karnataka MLA G Janardhana Reddy's conviction in an unlawful mining case is overturned by the Telangana High Court

On May 6, a trial court sentenced Reddy to seven years in prison.

Former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy's conviction and sentencing in the Obulapuram illegal mining case were suspended by the Telangana High Court on Wednesday.

On May 6, a trial court sentenced Reddy, a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Gangawati constituency, to seven years in prison. He was disqualified from the Karnataka legislature as a result of the sentencing. He will be able to keep his seat, though, because his conviction has been stayed.

Justice K Lakshman heard Reddy's appeal for a sentence suspension today. Reddy has already finished half of his sentence, the court observed. Additionally, it said that if his conviction is not overturned, the Indian Election Commission will announce a by-election.

In light of this, this Court believes that the petitioner, a sitting MLA who has won the trust of the public, would not be able to represent his constituents if the conviction is not suspended. As a result, this Court is inclined to revoke the conviction that the Special Court had recorded in the contested judgment," the Court continued.

From September 2011 to January 2015, Reddy was incarcerated in connection with the case. On May 6, he was arrested once more after being found guilty by the Principal Special Judge for CBI Cases in Hyderabad.

VD Rajagopal, K Mehfuz Ali Khan, and BV Srinivasa Reddy, who were also found guilty in the case, were also granted bail by the court today.

Additionally stayed is the conviction order against Obulapuram Mining Company.

Advocates Mayank Jain and Vimal Varma Vasireddy appeared in the case together with Senior Advocate S Nagamuthu, B Nalin Kumar, and PB Suresh.
