Law is not a rung on a career ladder for selfish reasons: CJI Surya Kant for Students of Law. 


At the National Law University (NLU) in Jodhpur, CJI Kant was giving a speech.
 


Surya Kant, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), issued a warning today that advocacy cannot be turned into a performance and utilized solely for selfish ends. 

The CJI stated at his commencement speech at the National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur, 

"The very fortress mentality that democracy sought to transcend is rebuilt when lawyers put spectacle before substance, complexity before clarity, or convenience before conscience." 

The CJI emphasized that in a constitutional democracy, the law should act more like a forum that remains open to discussion and reason than a closed system. 

He pointed out that language that is "wrapped in complexity, guarded by jargon, accessible only to those who can afford its language" can pose a challenge to openness. 

"There is a risk that the law, once liberated, may start to distance itself again in every generation," he continued. 

"Not to make law more arcane, but more intelligible" is what the CJI reminded the law students they were supposed to do. 

Additionally, CJI informed the students that law is more than just a market commodity or a career ladder. 
 


"The law cannot be used as leverage for private benefit. He stated, "It is a public trust," adding that the legitimacy
