Over the past ten years, the CJI office has received 8,630 complaints against sitting judges: The Lok Sabha's Law Ministry

Whether there was a record of the complaints received or any action taken in response to them was not disclosed by the Law Ministry.

The Union Law Ministry disclosed in parliament on Friday that 8,360 complaints against current judges have been filed with the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in the past ten years.

Matheswaran VS, a member of parliament (MP) for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), asked the question in the Lok Sabha on Friday, and the information was provided in response.

A list of allegations against Supreme Court or High Court justices for sexual misbehavior, corruption, or other significant irregularities was requested by the MP.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of State for Law and Justice, responded in writing that 8,360 complaints were received between 2016 and 2025, citing data from the Supreme Court.

Matheswaran also inquired as to whether these complaints had been addressed. That element was not included in the Law Ministry's response, though. Additionally, it did not explain why there was no record of complaints being addressed.

The Central government's awareness of any system the Supreme Court uses to keep track of complaints against judges of the High Courts or the Supreme Court for corruption, sexual misconduct, or other grave irregularity was another issue posed.

To put it simply, the Chief Justice of India and Chief Justices of High Courts have the authority to entertain complaints against judges through the "in-house procedure." According to the response, the CJI or the relevant High Court Chief Justice receives complaints against members of the higher court through the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) or in any other format.

Additionally, the Minister did not answer Matheswaran's query about whether the government plans to publish rules or take action to guarantee the methodical documentation, oversight, and accountability of complaints against higher judicial members.
