Suo motu PIL against the sale of cigarettes and narcotics to school and college students is issued by the Bombay High Court.

Following upsetting investigative journalism that appeared in a Marathi daily's June 14 and June 16, 2025 editions, the Court took the action.
A news story exposing the widespread sale of illegal substances, like as narcotics, cigarettes, and e-cigarettes, to school and college students in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) was recently taken suo motu cognisance of by the Bombay High Court in Aurangabad.
After reading news articles in a Marathi daily, a bench of Justices Ravindra V. Ghuge and YG Khobragade took the initiative.
The Court cautioned that if left unchecked, this will lead to young kids being addicted.
"Young students of an impressionable age are enticed into consumption of such drugs and cigarettes, virtually opening the path towards addiction and their physical destruction."
The Court instructed the Registrar (Judicial) to file a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) after carefully reviewing the reports.
Senior Advocate PR Katneshwarkar was designated as an amicus Curiae by the Bench to support it and draft the PIL.
In order to protect residents from such actions, the Court also called on the police to step up and operate "in the true spirit of the Department." It also noted,
"We record our appreciation for the Press Reporters of Dainik Sakal, who have taken up this issue."
