The Gujarat High Court establishes a 45-year-old minimum age requirement for Senior Advocate designation, and seniors must mention bars.

The Court further directed that at least two or three young attorneys with fewer than three years of bar experience be mentored and maintained by Senior Advocates.

The Gujarat High Court established a 45-year-old minimum age requirement to qualify for the Senior Advocate designation.

Crucially, the High Court has also prohibited Senior Advocates from bringing up matters involving requests for adjournments.  The Rules also require that at least two or three young attorneys with less than three years of bar experience be mentored and maintained by Senior Advocates.

These modifications became operative when the Court issued a notification of "The High Court of Gujarat (Designation of Senior Advocates) Rules, 2025."

In accordance with the updated Rules,

It is not appropriate for him or her to attend for adjournments or to speak any matters before the court.  At least two to three young attorneys with less than three years of experience will be mentored and maintained by [them].

The rules, which were announced on September 16, stipulate that in order to be eligible for the gown, prospective applicants must have at least 20 years of legal experience and typically practice before the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad, as well as before district courts and specialized tribunals.

According to the rules, candidates must also show "ability, legal acumen, special knowledge or distinction and reputation achieved in the practice of law" and have engaged in pro bono legal work.

"[He or she] has not been found guilty by a court of law and should not have been punished for a crime involving moral turpitude or contempt of court, or for any misconduct by the Gujarat Bar Council or the Indian Bar Council," the Rules further state.

In accordance with the new regulations, the Chief Justice of the High Court will establish a permanent Secretariat to begin the process of appointing Senior Advocates at least once annually.

Two Senior Advocates with at least ten years of experience must endorse each application, and attorneys who practice before the High Court are required to present fifty decisions from the previous five years.

Judicial personnel may be asked for information about applicants who are not in the High Court.  The Full Court will consider eligible applications and provide a final decision by majority or consensus.

A new application can only be submitted after two years if the first one is rejected.

Furthermore, according to the Rules, a full court ruling may revoke the Senior designation for professional misconduct or other stated causes.
